Hunter and Reflectors: A Journey Through Hunter Valley Wines and Music

Writer's picture: Monica BugnoMonica Bugno

The Hunter Valley wine region in New South Wales, Australia, is known for its warm, humid, Mediterranean-style climate, the region is one of the hottest wine regions in the world and home to some of the oldest vine stock globally. This climate is perfect for grapes, making Hunter Valley a cornerstone of Australia's wine industry.

At our recent event, Hunter and Reflectors, we explored the connection between wine, music, and reflection.

As Briant Clark wisely noted, "If you can’t drink and reflect on philosophy, your life is wasted."

Wine 1: Peterson House Semillon Pinot Noir

  • Winery: Peterson House, established in 1982 by Ian Peterson

  • Tasting Notes: Light gold straw hue, citrus and yeasty nose, fresh citrus from the Semillon with creamy, berry notes from the Pinot Noir

  • Paired Song: "Where Do You Go" — A song about belief and self-deception, much like affirmations that become truths. Sip, drift into your imagination, and find that safe, reflective space.

Wine 2: Tatler Brothers Blanc (Semillon, Chardonnay, Verdelho, Fiano)

  • Winery: Tatler Wine Estate

  • Tasting Notes: Pale green-yellow, citrus and tropical fruit nose, lemon, melon, and creamy palate

  • Paired Song: "When The River Runs Dry" — This vibrant blend pairs with the idea that some experiences are so good, you’ll keep coming back for more.

Wine 3: Gartelmann Benjamin 2024 Semillon

  • Winery: Gartelmann Wines, founded in 1996

  • Tasting Notes: Lemon, lime, grapefruit both on the nose and palate, crisp and refreshing

  • Paired Song: "Holy Grail" — Semillon is the holy grail of Hunter Valley, much like each wine region has its signature variety.

Wine 4: Pepper Tree Limited Release Verdelho

  • Winery: Pepper Tree Wines, established in 1991

  • Tasting Notes: Pale yellow-green, notes of mandarin, melon, musk, and spice

  • Paired Song: "Do You See What I See?" — A reflection on how Verdelho mirrors the terroir it comes from. Taste and see the land in every sip.

Wine 5: Gartelmann Wilhelm 2022 Shiraz

  • Winery: Gartelmann Wines

  • Tasting Notes: Deep ruby garnet, cherries, blackberries, hints of sandalwood; savoury tannins with aniseed and dark berries

  • Paired Song: "Say Goodbye" — Say goodbye to your expectations of Shiraz. Hunter Valley’s take is a fresh perspective on this classic variety.

Wine 6: Audrey Wilkinson Vin De Vie (The Wine of Life)

  • Winery: Audrey Wilkinson Vineyard, dating back to 1886

  • Tasting Notes: Brilliant salmon pink with red hues, fresh strawberries and cream on the nose, sweet cherries and strawberries on the palate with a clean finish

  • Paired Songs: "Blind Eye" and "Throw Your Arms Around Me" — The perfect close to the evening, these songs evoke forgiveness, connection, and heartfelt reflection.
